ELA Common Core State Standards for 3rd and 4th Grade
The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) provide a framework for what students should know and be able to do in language and literacy by the end of each grade level.
Language Standard L.1 is an essential component of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts. The 3rd Grade Language Standard L.1 (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.1)
In the 3rd grade, Language Standard L.1 focuses on building the foundation for the proper use of standard English grammar and usage. The standard requires students to demonstrate an understanding of subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and verb tenses. Students should be able to ensure that their writing has proper verb tense consistency.
By the end of third grade, students should be able to identify and use various types of nouns (e.g. common, proper, possessive), pronouns (e.g. personal, possessive, reflexive), verbs (e.g. action, linking, helping), adjectives, and adverbs. They are expected to use regular and irregular plural nouns, adjectives, and adverbs correctly, and to use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to form complex sentences. They should also be able to recognize and correct grammatical errors in their own writing and in the writing of others.
The 4th Grade Language Standard L.1 (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1)
In the 4th grade, Language Standard L.1 builds on the foundation established in the 3rd grade. Students are expected to further develop their understanding of subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, and verb tenses. They should be able to use modal auxiliaries (e.g. can, may, must) to convey various degrees of meaning, and demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage.
Furthermore, students must also show proficiency in the use of capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They should be able to use correct capitalization in proper nouns, recognize and use end punctuation, commas, and quotation marks correctly, and spell words correctly.
How Does 3rd Grade Prepare Students for 4th Grade English Language Arts?
The Language Standard L.1 in the 3rd grade sets a foundation for students to build upon in the 4th grade. Students in the 3rd grade learn the basics of grammar and usage, such as subject-verb agreement and pronoun usage. They also learn to identify and use different parts of speech, including common and proper nouns, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs.
In the 4th grade, students are expected to demonstrate more complex skills in grammar and usage. They learn about modal auxiliaries, perfect verb tenses, and advanced pronoun usage. In 3rd grade, students focus on Language Standard L.1.a of the CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.1, which requires them to identify and correctly use adjectives. This includes being able to identify adjectives in sentences, and to use them to describe and compare nouns. Students learn to recognize that adjectives modify nouns by providing information about their size, color, shape, texture, and other characteristics.

Building on this foundation, in 4th grade students move on to Language Standard L.1.d of the CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.1, which requires them to correctly order adjectives within sentences. To address these areas of struggle, teachers can provide targeted instruction and practice activities that focus on specific aspects of Language Standard L.1. This may include providing explicit instruction on grammar and usage rules, modeling correct usage in writing and speaking, and providing more opportunities for students to practice using these skills in context.
